What is Soil?
But where does the dirt come from?
First tiny bits of rock break off from bigger rocks. These tiny bits are the start of the dirt. Some animals, like snails, have hard shells. Over time the shells break into tiny pieces. Little by little the pieces become part of the the dirt. The bits of rock mix with moss and dead leaves., and when animals die their bodies break down and add to the mix. It takes over 100 years to make one inch of soil! |
