Parts of Soil
Let's explore the parts of the soil!
Ground Level
Ground level is about two inches thick. Grass grows here. The soil is dark. It has lots of humus. Topsoil Level
There are about eight inches of topsoil. Topsoil breaks into pieces easily. Some topsoil has a lot of humus. Food crops, like corn and wheat, are planted in topsoil. Subsoil Level
Subsoil is about 20 inches thick. This part of the soil is light. It is tightly packed. There is a very little humus here. Parent Material
Parent Material can be very deep. There is no humus here. There is only rock. Much of the rock is broken into pieces. |

What is Bedrock?
Bedrock is solid rock, deep in the Earth.
When earthquakes take place bedrock may become open in the air.
Then little by little, it may start to break up.
Then, soil will start to form!
